⚙️ Complete CVT Transmission Fluid Guide (Honda City GM6 & Grace)
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) paired with Honda's L15 series engines is smooth, responsive, and fuel-efficient — but it is unforgiving of improper fluids and neglected service intervals.
1. The Golden Fluid Rule: Honda HCF-2 Only
- Mandatory Fluid: Strictly Genuine Honda HCF-2 (Second Generation Continuously Variable Transmission Fluid).
- ⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: NEVER USE Honda ATF-DW1, ATF-Z1, or universal "multi-vehicle" CVT fluids. Regular automatic transmission fluids lack the precise traction co-efficients required by Honda's steel push-belt and conical pulleys. Using ATF will cause catastrophic belt slippage and internal transmission destruction within thousands of kilometers.
2. Capacities & Torques
- Drain & Fill Capacity: ~3.4 to 3.6 Liters on level ground.
- Drain Plug: 3/8-inch square drive drain bolt.
- Drain Plug Torque: 49 N·m (36 lb-ft) with a fresh 18mm aluminum crush washer (Part # 90471-PX4-000).
- Fill Port: Remove the black rubber breather plug with the "HCF-2" label located on top of the transmission housing near the airbox. Use a clean, long-neck funnel.
3. Philippine Service Intervals
- Metro Manila Heavy Traffic (Severe Schedule): Every 20,000 km to 25,000 km (or 12 months). Extreme stop-and-go thermal cycling shears friction modifiers rapidly in tropical humidity.
- Highway / Normal Mixed Driving: Every 35,000 km to 40,000 km.
- Internal Cartridge Filter & Pan Magnet Service: At 80,000 km to 100,000 km, drop the steel pan to clean sludge off the magnets and replace the cylindrical paper filter (Part # 25450-P4V-003).
4. Symptoms of Fluid Degradation
- Initial shudder or RPM stumble when shifting from Park/Neutral into Drive (D) at a stoplight.
